5 Homemade Ice Cream Recipes National Ice Cream Day

Wednesday, July 15th, 2020

We truly all are screaming for ice cream this week because this Sunday, July 19th, is National Ice Cream Day! As if summer wasn’t enough of an excuse to have ice cream, now we have a full day dedicated to the creamy dessert. National Ice Cream day is normally the third weekend in July, and falls in the second half of National Ice Cream Month.

Culinary experts tend to consider Naples, Italy the birthplace of ice cream, as they were the first to incorporate ice, sugar, dairy, and salt, however ice topped with syrup dates back to the days of the Persian Empire. From its foundation, ice cream has evolved into the many delicious forms and flavors we know today, including gelato, soft serve, fro-yo, frozen custard, sorbet, sherberts, ice cream sandwiches, ice cream cakes, Popsicles, and more!

For National Ice Cream Day, we thought we’d share five of our favorite ice cream recipes to try at home this weekend. From the classic flavors to the rocky roads of the ice cream world, there is a flavor to satisfy every palate. Note: some recipes require an ice cream machine, but an ice cream machine can be avoided by constantly freezing and stirring your batter. Read recipes for details.

If there is anything kids love, it is a recipe with Oreos! This cookies and cream recipe only has five ingredients and makes homemade ice cream fun and easy. Whip this recipe up as a family and serve in bowls or cones, or blend for a creamy cookies and cream milkshake reminiscent of the McDonald’s McFlurry! Enjoy!

For a mature palate, this green tea ice cream will bring a creamy burst of coconut flavor into your mouth, and give you a considerable amount of green tea flavor too. This recipe uses full-fat coconut milk and green tea powder as its main flavor profiles, and is enhanced with the sweetness from medjool dates. This ice cream only has six ingredients and is refined sugar-free. And bonus: it’s slightly caffeinated!

French Vanilla Ice Cream

This week, let us negate the notion that French vanilla ice cream is boring! Vanilla ice cream has been labeled “the simplest” ice cream, but we believe that is because it is a base for an even grander dessert. This recipe is custard based, meaning it uses egg yolks, and allows you to build on top of the traditional vanilla flavor. Add a chocolate hard shell for a satisfying crunch, or create a banana split with hot fudge, chopped nuts, and sprinkles. Blend with your favorite milk and strawberries to create a creamy strawberry milkshake or smash between two cookies for an even better treat. Try this vanilla ice cream recipe and get your creativity working this weekend!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream

Is there a flavor combination more satisfying than chocolate and peanut butter? Reese’s candy proves that there possibly couldn’t be, and this next ice cream recipe will satisfy that peanutty chocolate flavor craving…just look at the picture! In this recipe, you get a breakdown of the categories of mix-ins. There are cookies, which give you many store-bought and homemade options. Next are candies, such as M&Ms, Butterfingers, gummy bears and cookie dough bites. Second to last is toppings, which can go as sweet as marshmallow fluff and as natural as strawberries. Lastly of course, your garnishes. Garnishing your ice cream makes for the most picturesque ice cream, and adds loads of fun while decorating. Try sprinkles, pretzels, nuts, drizzles, whipped cream, or mint leaves. For this recipe specifically, use Oreo crumbles, mini peanut butter cups, melted peanut butter, and hot fudge. Enjoy!

Dole Whip (VG)

Dole Whip

Dole Whip screams Disney, it screams summer, and we’re including it on our favorite ice creams list! Many Dole Whip recipes online include vanilla ice cream in their recipes, but this is inconsistent with the actual Disneyland Dole Whip recipe, which is entirely non-dairy and vegan. We took this recipe from the official Dole website, where coconut milk is used for creaminess, a banana is used for sweetness and creaminess, and lime juice is used to enhance the natural flavors even further. This treat is great for the entire family, so be sure to make a large portion. Now our mouths are watering… enjoy!

As we approach this Sunday, bookmark your favorite flavors, hit the grocery store, and order your ice cream machine. We hope you try out one of these recipes for yourself and celebrate National Ice Cream Day with your family.
