9 Safety Tips For A Carefree Summer

Monday, June 17th, 2019

I think we can all agree that summer in Whitney Ranch is awesome (hello, blissfully endless days at The Ranch House pool). It doesn’t get better than a calendar full of adventure, parks, sports, treats, and activities for the kids (and grown-ups too!). Don’t get derailed by injuries this season! Plan ahead with these safety tips in mind to keep you and your family healthy and accident-free this summer.

Drink plenty of water

: What Moms Love

Keep your family hydrated and full of energy by drinking enough water, especially as temperatures rise. The jury’s out on exactly how much you need per day because everyone’s needs vary depending on overall health and level of activity, but the 8 x 8 rule is an easy one to remember: eight glasses of eight ounces for adults. For children, they typically require at least one eight-ounce cup for each year of life: so, a one-year-old needs one cup per day, a two-year-old, two cups, and so on until age nine.

Wear enough sunscreen

: Environmental Working Group

Everyone should be wearing sunscreen daily all year long, but it becomes especially important this time of year as you spend more time outside at the pool, parks, and enjoying other outdoor activities. Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and reapply every couple of hours or so, more frequently when swimming or getting wet.

Stay cool

To avoid heat exposure, find shady spots whenever possible during outdoor activities, and take regular breaks to come in from the heat to recharge and cool off. Learn more about heat exposure, symptoms, and how to recognize them HERE.

Don’t be a bug magnet

There’s nothing worse than becoming the next meal of mosquitoes, spiders, and other creepy crawlies. When in areas with lots of insects, stay away from standing water, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, and apply a bug repellent. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a DEET-based product, however, if you prefer to avoid it, there are some natural repellents that have shown to be effective. Be water safe

Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death of children under four. Pool, beach, lake, river, and waterpark days are epic, so keep them that way by following water safety guidelines for the entire family, from infants to teens and parents. Check out them all HERE.

Never leave children and animals unattended in the car

On average, 37 U.S. children die each year in hot vehicles. On a 90-degree day, the temperature in a parked car can quickly climb to more than 110 degrees in a matter of minutes and to temperatures of 120 and more. Never leave children or pets unattended in the car for any reason or for any length of time.

Practice bike safety

Check the fit of your child’s helmet and purchase a new one if it no longer fits, and always replace a cracked helmet or one that’s been in a fall or crash. Have the kids ride on the sidewalk and community trails whenever possible, obey the rules of the road, wear bright or reflective clothing, and keep out of the street during busier times of the day when people are going to and returning from work. Check out more bike safety tips HERE.

Brush up on your outdoor skills

If camping and hiking are on your summer bucket list this year, it’s a good idea to revisit some of the basic skills before you hit the trails: choosing a trail, basic survival techniques, and first aid know-how are all important to know so you’re prepared to prevent and handle any accidents.

Restock your first aid kit

Dust off your first aid kit and replace missing and expired items. Create or buy another and place it in the car so you have one at the ready during outings and activities. Learn how to create a well-stocked first aid kit HERE.

Have an adventure-filled summer!
