8 Kid Friendly Backyard Ideas

Monday, July 8th, 2019

Everyone loves living outdoors in the summer, especially kids. Think back to your own childhood, and chances are your summer days were filled with ice cream on the deck, sprinkler runs, endless bike rides, and DIY skateboard and big wheel stunts (seriously, how are we still alive?). Help the kids make summer memories by creating outdoor spaces just for them with these eight ideas.

Outdoor Playhouse

: The House of Wood

The holy grail of kids’ outdoor spaces, the playhouse it where it’s at! Give ‘em a place to lounge, play, and call their own. Simple or elaborate, they won’t care, they’ll just love being able to have their own digs for their toys and books, and a place to take a break from the grown-ups! Check out a bunch of free playhouse plans HERE

Pergola and Twinkle Lights

: Kloter Farms

There’s something about twinkle lights that are simply magical in the evening, especially after a long hot summer’s day. A pergola creates a lovely backyard retreat and natural gathering place for the kids, family, and friends; make it extra cozy with comfy chairs, pillows, and candles. Get some inspiration HERE.

Clear Sight Lines

Kid friendly for YOU, the ability to easily see the kids while you’re in the kitchen or family room is a MUST. We love the homes here at Whitney Ranch because they’re designed for families and their priorities, with outdoor living spaces designed right off the main living areas. Check out floorplans at The New Home Company’s Canyon View Plan 2 HERE or the Newcastle by Toll Brothers HERE.

DIY Play Area

The kiddos need a place to spread their wings and get the wiggles out. Create an area just for them outdoors that includes space for games and activities. We’re loving this fun DIY outdoor chalkboard HERE; make it an art center by adding an easel (this one’s great) or small picnic table with all the supplies.

Raised Bed or Potted Garden

: Big Blog of Gardening

Kids love getting their hands dirty, so put them to work and have them help you create and maintain a backyard garden! Let them choose some of the produce to plant, give them daily or weekly tasks, and definitely have them participate in the harvest. Get some helpful tips about how to get started HERE. Who knows, maybe growing their own veggies will encourage them to eat more veggies.

Backyard Water Park

If you make this one happen you’ll be THE talk of the neighborhood and the afternoon destination of every child on your street. Create your own backyard water play area — think water balloon pinatas, a kid car wash, obstacle course, and more. Get some fun inspiration HERE and HERE.

Fire Pit

S’mores, stories, and songs under the stars. What could be a better family night in the spring or summer? Built in or freestanding, a backyard fire pit is the nighttime destination for family and friends, so be sure it has plenty of seating and a few small tables for drinks and snacks. Get started HERE.

Plant Some Grass

No matter how large or small your backyard space is, adding a stretch of grass will give the kids room for games, toys, and lots of unstructured play time. And who doesn’t love a game of lawn darts, cornhole, or croquet? The grown-ups deserve some game time, too!
