Back To School Bucket List

Friday, August 4th, 2017

A new academic year is approaching fast! The time has come to sort through last year’s school supplies and clothes and prepare for the first day school. Luckily, this doesn’t mean the remainder of summer vacay has to be less exciting. We’ve put together a checklist of last-minute family fun for you to enjoy as a back-to-school bucket list while easing into the school mindset.

1. Charades

Charades is a great family game to help kids develop problem solving skills. Without the advantage of speaking or writing, they have to interpret a book, movie, or song title using gestures or drawing pictures to convey their message.

2. Backyard Camp Out

What does one need to survive the night in the great outdoors? Take the whole family on a short-range adventure right at home with a backyard campout! Have your kids help pitch the tent or build it with some sheets, tables, and chairs. Have them prepare the inside with comfy pillows and blankets. Then take a day-time safari around the yard to explore the plants, bugs, and other critters that call your backyard their home! When darkness falls, take to the tent with some storytime before bed. Have the kids read one of their favorite books or reflect on their favorite part of the day.

3. Family Picnic in the Park

Family picnics are a great way to spend quality time together while enjoying summertime outdoors! Have the kids help prepare the picnic basket with some easy-to-make recipes. PB&J sandwiches, ants on a log, or Kool-Aid drinks are easy snacks kids can make! Having the kids help make snacks gets them used to process-oriented activities while creating a family bonding experience.

Check out some kid-friendly recipes here.

4. Museum Day Trip

Kids can have a blast and not always be aware that they’re also learning new things. Plan a family day trip to a local museum or historical site and let them get to know their world! Many museums have interactive features that kids can touch, listen to, and experience. Find museums and historical sites in and around Rocklin here.
