Make Your Own Memory Quilt

Tuesday, September 6th, 2016

Memories are one of the most wonderful parts about being human. Scrapbooks, collages, paintings, photo albums, yearbooks…we are always trying to find ways to keep the good ole’ days alive. Have you ever thought about making a quilt out of those memories? With a bit of sewing skills, fun fabric, and a handful of keepsake t-shirts and photos…you can make one of your very own!

Here’s How to Get Started:

Step (1) The first thing you need to decide is what size you would like your quilt to be. Sizes are usually determined by the type of mattress the quilt will call home: King, queen, twin, twin XL, etc. You can use aruler to determine the actual dimensions.

Step (2) Make sure you have all of the proper cutting tools. You want a cutting tool that will precisely cut each square equally. Rotary cutters are perfect for those who are making their first quilt!

Step (3) You might be eager to start cutting, but it would be wise to purchase a cutting mat first! Otherwise you could ruin your gorgeous tabletop that once belonged to your great-great- grandmother, and you don’t want that.

Step (4) Have all of your sewing tools at your fingertips, such as safety pins, straight pins, a seam ripper, your desired fabric, batting, sewing machine, and an iron. You can get these at any local craft store!

Step (5) Make sure to wash your fabric! This will remove any unwanted dirt and grime.

Step (6) Use your iron to press out any of the wrinkles.

Step (7) Take your ruler and measure out each square of your quilt. If you want to add decorative fabrics in your quilt, like borders and filler squares, make sure you measure those out too!

Step (8) Cut out your squares that will be used and lay them out to see how your quilt will look all pieced together. This will help you decide what looks best before you start sewing.

Now that you have your tools, fabric, and a design plotted and planned, it’s time to start making your quilt! Which you can learn how to do HERE.

Enjoy this snuggly daily reminder of precious times with your loved ones. Happy Quilting!
