7 Tips for Painting Your New Home!

When our homes need a serious makeover, a splash of paint can cure any signs of drab! But, if you’ve never painted the inside of your home before, we have some tips to help you tackle that first paint job.

Wash Your Walls. All the dust, dirt and grime that accumulates onto our walls can create an uneven surface… not suitable for painting! Make your walls squeaky clean and smooth before applying that first coat of paint, which can be done with soap and water, or TSP. EXAMPLE

Cover Rollers In Plastic Wrap. When you need to take a break from all that painting, wrap your rollers in plastic wrap and stick it in the fridge to preserve the paint! This will save you time so you don’t have to constantly wash off your hardened brushes. EXAMPLE

Use a Bucket vs. Paint Tray. With paint trays you have to constantly keep refilling, which only adds more unnecessary time and energy to the project. Ditch the paint tray and use a 5 gallon bucket with a roller screen, you’ll be glad you did! EXAMPLE

Cover Your Floors. The clean up is usually more draining than the task of painting itself. Spare yourself a nasty mess by covering your floors with plastic sheeting, old clothes, towels, or newspapers. EXAMPLE

Let the Paint Dry. Once your painting project is complete, you’ll be excited to get all of your furniture back in the room and see how it looks with your brand-new wall color. Paint needs at least 24 hours to dry!! Make sure you give it enough time before putting the room back together.

Buy Eco-Friendly Paint. Paint can definitely brighten up a room, but it’s also full of toxic chemicals if you don’t get the right kind. Buy eco-friendly paint to keep those nasty VOC’s at bay! EXAMPLE

Test Out The Color. Before you start painting, you want to make sure that you’re invested in your chosen color. Paint a piece of foam board and move it around the room to see what the color would look like in different lighting.
